From November 9-11, His Excellency Jakaya Kikwete, the former President of Tanzania, led a mission to Malawi. This was the second visit as part of the Education Commission’s Learning Generation Pioneer Country activities.
His Excellency met with Prof. Peter Mutharika, the President of Malawi, at Kamuzu Palace. Professor Mutharika is a Co-convener of the Education Commission and attended the September 2016 report launch at the United Nation’s General Assembly. At the meeting, the two leaders discussed the implications of the Commission’s recommendations and concrete steps the government could take to achieve the Learning Generation projections. His Excellency Professor Mutharika reiterated his support for the Commission’s report and agenda for action.
During the delegation trip to Malawi, President Kikwete also met with the Ambassadors of the United States, Norway (a Co-convening country) and Germany, representatives of the U.K. Department for International Development (DfID), World Bank, UNICEF, USAID and the Education Attaché from the Embassy of Norway. President Kikwete also met with: the Minister of Education, Science and Technology; Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development; Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development and Former Minister of Education; Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Principal Secretary Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Chief Economic Advisor to the President; and the Director of Communications – Statehouse.
President Mutharika confirmed that his government is ready to undertake needed reforms. He stated that his government is ready to work on preparing an education transformation plan and is eager to welcome Commission experts to join in this process. President Mutharika also indicated his support for the Commission’s Multilateral Development Bank Investment Mechanism recommendations.
