RewirEd: Rewiring global education to jumpstart positive change

Commission Chair Gordon Brown’s keynote for the Education Financing Day of the RewirEd Summit in December 2021 in Dubai

The Education Commission was proud to be a strategic partner of the RewirEd Summit held in Dubai from December 12-14, 2021. Led by Dubai Cares, in partnership with Expo 2020 Dubai and in close coordination with the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Summit was an important opportunity for the global education community and new partners to come together to catalyze a “rewiring” of education and jumpstart the positive change needed for the future of education around the world. Over 2,000 participants attended the Summit in person and more than 450 speakers from 60 countries shared their ideas and expertise.

Commission Chair Gordon Brown delivered two keynote speeches – one at RewirEd’s official opening on December 12th, and the other on the Education Financing Day on December 14 (see video above). Commission Director Liesbet Steer participated in two public events – check out the recordings below:

High-level panel and launch of RewirEd Declaration of Connectivity for Education – Framework for Action and InvestmentDeveloped by UNESCO in partnership with Dubai Cares, the Declaration aims to ensure that connected technology better supports the right to education by drawing on lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and putting forward principles and commitments to help establish priorities for education’s digital transformation and financing. The launch included a high-level panel discussion on how the Declaration can help steer financing efforts and initiatives.

Unlocking Innovations to Finance Secondary Education for AllThis session examined how we utilize innovative and equitable financing to ensure all young people learn the skills they need for work and life. In partnership with Generation Unlimited, UNICEF, and the World Data Lab, we launched the World Skills Clock to visualize real-time data on the global learning and skills crisis. The Skills Clock projects current learning trends of both secondary literacy/numeracy and digital skills for the global population aged 15 to 24, disaggregated by country. It presents the data in dashboard form, highlighting the severity of the digital divide and making a clear case for action.

The Commission also co-hosted and participated in several high-level financing roundtables on digital learning, school health and nutrition, and innovative finance including the International Finance Facility for Education. Stay tuned for more reflections and results from the rich conversations at RewirEd that will inform the UN Transforming Education Summit set to take place in September 2022!
